La vida y la historia de Dwight son incre\u00edbles, y me siento en la obligaci\u00f3n de compartirlas. Dwight, un padre de siete hijos muy trabajador, se ganaba la vida inspeccionando rascacielos y trabaj\u00f3 en algunos de los edificios m\u00e1s reconocidos del mundo. Nuestros caminos se cruzaron por primera vez cuando Dwight acudi\u00f3 a m\u00ed tras la amputaci\u00f3n de una pierna a ra\u00edz de una lesi\u00f3n en el trabajo. Pero esta amputaci\u00f3n no era la primera para Dwight, quien, a\u00f1os atr\u00e1s, hab\u00eda desarrollado una infecci\u00f3n mientras trabajaba en el extranjero, lo que provoc\u00f3 su primera amputaci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>A pesar de haber perdido ambas piernas, nada ni nadie pod\u00eda detener a Dwight. Nuestros caminos se cruzaron porque la aseguradora de indemnizaci\u00f3n laboral de Dwight estaba retrasando su tratamiento m\u00e9dico, incluyendo medicamentos vitales y adaptaciones en su apartamento que le permitieran ducharse con seguridad. Cuando su m\u00e9dico de cabecera recomend\u00f3 que se instalaran barras de apoyo para garantizar la seguridad en la ducha, el perito de seguros se neg\u00f3 a autorizar la adaptaci\u00f3n y la remiti\u00f3 a la Revisi\u00f3n de Utilizaci\u00f3n.  El m\u00e9dico de la Revisi\u00f3n de Utilizaci\u00f3n se limit\u00f3 a repetir el resultado deseado por la aseguradora: denegar la solicitud, aumentar las ganancias de la aseguradora y dejar a Dwight, literalmente, a la intemperie. Tuvo que ir a la zona de la piscina al aire libre del complejo de apartamentos para ducharse de manera segura. A pesar de este contratiempo, Dwight no se desanim\u00f3 y seguimos luchando por su derecho a recibir el tratamiento adecuado.<\/p>\n<p>Desafortunadamente, el Senado estatal de California, mediante los proyectos de ley SB 863 y SB 899, hab\u00eda reformado dr\u00e1sticamente el sistema de indemnizaci\u00f3n laboral en detrimento de los trabajadores de California de todo el estado. Bajo este sistema, ni siquiera yo, como su abogado, pod\u00eda simplemente solicitar una audiencia y dejar que un juez decidiera si una persona con doble amputaci\u00f3n ten\u00eda derecho a una barra de apoyo en la ducha. En cambio, nuestro \u00fanico recurso era apelar la decisi\u00f3n del m\u00e9dico de revisi\u00f3n de casos (UR) ante una revisi\u00f3n m\u00e9dica \u00abindependiente\u00bb. Pero ese revisor \u00abindependiente\u00bb, seg\u00fan el nuevo proceso, permanecer\u00eda en el anonimato, no ver\u00eda, hablar\u00eda ni examinar\u00eda a Dwight, e incluso como su abogado, se me priv\u00f3 del derecho a examinar las credenciales del m\u00e9dico o a interrogarlo sobre el tema.<\/p>\n<p>Mientras se llevaba a cabo esa revisi\u00f3n \u00abindependiente\u00bb, Dwight y yo decidimos ponernos en contacto con la CBS para hacer p\u00fablico este grave asunto. Sorprendentemente, el poder de la mala publicidad tiene una capacidad incre\u00edble para generar cambios. Efectivamente, poco antes de que se emitiera el reportaje, la compa\u00f1\u00eda de seguros decidi\u00f3 que era hora de resolver la reclamaci\u00f3n de Dwight y proporcionarle la atenci\u00f3n que se merec\u00eda.<\/p>\n<p>El acuerdo no solo proporcion\u00f3 a Dwight y a su familia algo m\u00e1s que barras de apoyo, sino que les permiti\u00f3 mudarse m\u00e1s cerca de sus hijos. Pero la incre\u00edble historia de Dwight no termin\u00f3 ah\u00ed. A pesar de una recuperaci\u00f3n exigente, de tener que volver a aprender a caminar \u2014por segunda vez\u2014 y de todos los problemas que conllevaban sus pr\u00f3tesis dobles, Dwight decidi\u00f3 convertirse en una fuente de positividad en el mundo. Dwight fund\u00f3 una empresa de calzado y personalizaba los zapatos para distraer la atenci\u00f3n de la gente de sus piernas prot\u00e9sicas. Luego donaba los zapatos especialmente dise\u00f1ados a otros amputados y veteranos de guerra. \u00c9l y su esposa Debbie tambi\u00e9n colaboraron con Amputee Empowerment Partners para ayudar a otros amputados.
