Greg Bentley and Keith More of Bentley & More LLP settled a $30 million catastrophic personal injury case on behalf of a woman who was severely injured when a piece of a garbage truck broke off on the 22 freeway and came crashing through her windshield, striking her directly in the face.
In November of 2015, a then-26-year-old woman was driving her car on the westbound 22 freeway in Garden Grove, CA, when the drive shaft of a garbage truck broke loose several cars in front of her. After striking 10 other vehicles, the drive shaft ultimately ricocheted off the roadway and projected like a missile through the windshield of the woman’s vehicle, striking her in the face and continuing through her headrest and into her vehicle.
She suffered a massive traumatic brain injury, contusions to her frontal lobe, multiple facial fractures, and even a traumatic increase in the space between her eyes. Her injury has caused her permanent reductions in her capacity for learning and memory, major difficulties in daily life, issues with word-finding, depression, vision loss, and a host of other issues. She is unable to cook, sleep or take care of her family. She is in constant pain and has several other bodily injuries.
Court documents showed that a California Highway Patrol officer found that parts of the truck had not received necessary maintenance. Greg and Keith argued that the company that owned the truck was negligent and had a conscious disregard for public safety.
